Our Story
New beginnings
I am Nikki Donaldson and the founder of Companions to Caretakers. My passion for creating this rescue was born from a life-changing event on October 5, 2023 when I suffered a stroke from a chiropractor adjustment. Before that day, I was a confident and dedicated critical care paramedic with over 10 years experience in the medical field. I took pride in being an optimistic caregiver, always ready to help those in need, and spending my days off recharging in nature—exploring the outdoors with my pack by my side.
Everything changed in an instant and the life I knew was gone forever after the Stroke happened. Each day since has been a journey to rediscover myself and find a new sense of purpose, yet In my darkest moments, it was my dogs who carried me through—offering unwavering love, support, and meaning when I needed it most.
Since then, two of my girls have been trained—by other trainers and then myself—to become the caretakers I never knew I would need. Atlas and Kora, through their loyalty, intuition, and constant guidance, have helped lead me toward that new beginning. They are the heart and soul behind this mission.
I made the much needed decision to step away from my EMS career summer of 2026 and now dedicate my life to something just as fulfilling. Companions to Caretakers exists to provide rescued dogs a second chance—at a life with a purpose. Through our services, we transform abandoned little souls into much needed service animals, creating a path where both dog and human can heal, grow, and support one another in ways that are truly life-changing.
Our goals
From rescue and training, to community education, Companions to Caretakers offers a range of pet services designed to support pet owners and their animals, including dog boarding and dog walking. We focus on building strong bonds with every animal and helping dogs reach their full potential for a family in need.
